Terrible news. A lot of this seems to be happening this summer, but five, possibly six, in one incident is horrible.

Just seen this. How on earth do five or six people all die at the same place on the hottest day of the year so far when it wasn't even windy? Weird beyond belief.
Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry. |

It is unlikely in the extreme that five adults could enter the sea at Camber and all drown. It's one of the safest beaches in the SE; almost flat for miles and very shallow slope. These bodies almost certainly entered the water from out at sea, from a sunken vessel of some sort.
Bexley Dave Can you hear the Brighton sing? I can't hear a ******* thing! "The most arrogant, obnoxious bunch of deluded little sun tanned, loafer wearing mummy's boys I've ever had the misfortune of having to listen to" (Burnley forum) |

I wonder if part of the problem is that people are so used to the more benign (well usually!) Mediterranean or Caribbean seas that they overlook just how powerful (even when relatively calm) the waters around this island can be.

Not being disrespectful at all, genuinely wondered whether there was a suicide cult involved.

They were reported as being 'fully clothed', who would be fully clothed on a really hot day like yesterday. More like they were migrants attempting to make the crossing and their boat sank? Nobody has reported anyone missing either all ties in with this theory doing the rounds

we have some of the fastest tides in the world around our waters, if they went to far out and the tide was going out even strong swimmers would struggle. However it's interesting to note the mention of "dangerous fish" and as our coastal waters warm up new species to the area are being found. But as stereotypical as it may be of me, I think it more likely a case of immigrants trying to enter the country illegally with an overcrowded boat. Which even without the deaths is tragic in itself. My cousin was killed at 19 by a riptide about a year ago in what she had been told was a relatively safe spot and when not that far out. It happens. She was in a group of people and 2 of them never come back. I don't know what has happened in this instance, but it is absolutely viable that they could have been caught in a rip.
