I'll have ballsed all this up so dont take the piss when you see the flaws. Im doing it on the train, on a phone, and with my s**ty memory. All the lather about Benteke has got me thinking more widely about our transfer strategy. Here's where I got to. Tell me where you disagree with the assertions and why. Our revenues for as long as we are PL during the current TV deal should be circa £130m, give or take 10% depending on how much we appear on the telly and our position. As such, my gut tells me something like £90m-£100m will go on 'player spending'. My rationale may be wrong but I think that will take us to the upper end of our FFP capacity and we won't go over. When I say 'player spending' I mean net spend on players plus total wages (ie all bonuses included). That is ALL players down to grass roots. Agree so far? More or less? What that means is that if we sign a player for 5 years at 10 mill and 10 mill in wages (£40k ish a week) then such players cost us £4m per season if we have neutral net spend. That's about 4% of our annual player spend or maybe a bit more ON JUST ONE PLAYER. I think that devoting that level is fine. Doubling that -- 8% -- is getting high but okay, maybe for the absolutely ideal candidate. But when we get into 30m transfers with 30m wages...then I get cold feet. At 12.5m a season in annual outlay, that is too many eggs in the one basket for my liking. PS: I make no pretense that the totals are going to be super precise bit broadly the question I am asking is: what proportion* of our spend should go on one player. i think this years transfer plans have gone very well so far. we needed a better partner for scotty dann. got it in tomkins we needed decent winger to rival wilf & yannick. got it in townsend needed a replacement for jules & mcarthy. got it in mandanda. all 3 signings cost, £24m great buisness, £14m net spend! all good. we havnt got the striker we needed, yet but im not worried about that as wickhams fit, if we dont sign a striker i wont care as kai-kai can deputise. as you can tell, im over the moon & really optimistic about next season. ‘Football isn’t instant coffee. i think this years transfer plans have gone very well so far.

we needed a better partner for scotty dann. got it in tomkins

we needed decent winger to rival wilf & yannick. got it in townsend

needed a replacement for jules & mcarthy. got it in mandanda.

all 3 signings cost, £24m great buisness, £14m net spend! all good.

we havnt got the striker we needed, yet but im not worried about that as wickhams fit, if we dont sign a striker i wont care as kai-kai can deputise.

as you can tell, im over the moon & really optimistic about next season.

Football's a squad game, one good game against Bromley does not mean kaikai a prem league player. Last season patrick Bamford scored an hatrick against Bromley and prove he was not good enough in the prem. I not say I don't rate kaikai, however with the prem money available,we should of had this striker sitution sorted.

Kaikai can't deputise

No team would be stupid enough to go into the season with one striker, certainly not one who had a injury hit previous season. We'll get a striker, how good remains to be seen.....I'm not hopeful anymore.

i do want us to sign another recognised striker, but would it be the end of tho of the world if we didnt rush it, took a punt on a kid and look again in janury if it didnt work out. We can't wait to Jan with one recognised striker, I agree campbell is no good, however we had at least 6 weeks to identify striker targets.
