Not sure how many will though and sounds like Pacquiao is ruling himself out...

Like pro boxing, risky if you're up there as a real contender or the champ.

Very unfair on those that have followed the old rules to have them changed so late on. If any pro goes for it and takes a medal, he's taking it from someone who has spent years with that as their goal.

Yes I agree. You work a regular job, awake on a bitterly cold January winter morning to head to the Gym before heading to your place of work. You traipse around the country at yours or your families expense in a beaten up old car to appear & fight at venues so you can qualify for the Olympics & yet within a few weeks of The Olympics a Professional can state his desire to fight without objection is wrong IMO. And don't even get me started on Golf & Tennis they a re only there for the TV Networks.

These amateurs often have to go and fight all over the world, and not to the glamour venues of the pro game.

The Olympic rules are a bit of a fudge. You get pros in some sports while others aren't allowed them, or only some of them. Anyone can seemingly change nation to represent someone else, except in tennis for some reason (which I only know because GB are the ones being denied a GB player as he used to represent Slovenia). Then some sports you can have lots of places while in others you can only put forward one competitor, even if you have the number 1 & 2 in the world ranks.

yep, good point... would be unfair for the amateurs and very late ruling at this time. What are they thinking of? Boxing in general has funny things going on but this is a big one.

They used to have very, very dodgy scoring (Roy Jones Jr) and they had the farce with 2 simultaneous rings and bouts, leading to one guy getting punched after mistaking the wrong bell/buzzer for his bout. He rolled about like Pepe from Real Madrid while the ref counted him out. Then the IOC called it a no-contest and made them fight again, even though the winner was already celebrating in the stands with his family. Then in the second bout they mixed up the buzzer/bell even though there was only one fight going on. Same bloke won both fights and is the only fighter to record two knockouts at the Olympics in one day.

Putting pros in with amateurs seems mad.

most people in the boxing world - particularly ex boxers and pundits - have slammed this decision. If the general consensus from the sport is that it's the wrong move, will any pro boxers actually put themselves forward for qualifying? If so it would be rather cnutish and they would bloomin' well know it.

Wont get paid, you have to box at qualifying rounds which you don't get paid for… Cant see a great deal of pros taking this up.
Will be interesting for 2020 though.
The AIBA really are looking desperate now trying to stay relevant in the world of boxing.
