Menthol cigarettes and 10 packs banned by the EU

Pointless. Either ban them or let them be like any other product in the open market. Are they going to make you buy 20 cigars at a time as well? They should make a directive that all Volkswagons have to be painted in the same drab colour too.

In fact the idea of a tax on the product to recoup losses created by smoking makes a lot more sense. As a compromise, it allows people to make a decision, and for the costs of those decisions to be recouped. Especially as the ban on menthol cigarettes won't come into full effect until 2020. If the concern is with children smoking, then why not focus on those who are selling packs of fags to children, and hit them with punitive actions (bans from sale of smokes and booze, huge fines etc). As usual, the pro-business arm of the EU will pander to profit, over the interests of citizens.

A more realistic approach would to be funding programs of research on ecigs, and programs designed to help EU countries health systems promote smoking programs and systems aimed at helping people quit, treatment programs. The role of the EU should not be to rule, but to help nations to co-ordinate and promote solutions to shared issues and problems.

I find it funny that they are worried about slightly minty cigarettes but are happy to have booze for sale that tastes like a soft drink. I'd give it a few months before someone has come up with a secondary menthol filter you can attach to any cigarette too.

Problem - Children start smoking Solution - Change the packaging, make them buy more cigs and remove menthol cigs. Is there even any evidence that kids start on menthols? I know a lot of smokers move to menthols.

It's been a few years since I was under 16 but I can honestly say that I don't remember anyone buying menthol fags. Everyone would have laughed at them. All the local shops near our school sold single cigarettes. I presume that shops don't do this now but I bet the 6th formers do.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses. |
