The bloke who beat the Isle of Wight council at the magistrates court over taking his daughter out of school for a holiday, has now beaten them again in the high court. Now they should all stop penalising sensible parents and wasting council funds trying to prosecute them.

A victory for common sense over anal retentiveness. Round of applause.

Taking him to the high court after losing in the magistrates was just c***ish. Hopefully they have to pay all the costs, which will make them think twice about doing the same again. It won't of course, as it's not their money that they fritter away.

All that will happen is that the Government will tighten up the law to close this loophole.

There was a study on the effects of fines for collecting kids late from nursery. When fines were trialled, the parents came later as it removed the guilt and it became a cheap babysitter. Even with fines for taking kids out, it's still likely cheaper than going away during school holidays. It's a ridiculous system. Change it or stop airlines etc overcharging. There's supply and demand and then there's taking the p1ss.

"We will look at the judgement in detail but are clear children's attendance is non-negotiable so we will now look to change the law," said a spokesman for the Department for Education. You don't even have to send your kids to school, but if you choose to you're subject to ridiculous things like this.

You'll get kids being kept home in protest over this next, like the SATs. What did we do before? Just got on with it.

I shall be very annoyed if parents will now be allowed to take their kids out of school during term time as mine leaves school in one week's time

If I took my boy for a week on holiday in term time I would tell them where to stick their fine. Just who the hell do these people think they are? As long as it's not a regular thing. It's the old saying, 'Give someone just a little bit of power and they WILL ALWAYS abuse it'

Yes these tin pot nazis will always get a hard on over policing the people who agree to be policed.
