I've just sold my house and am about to treat myself to my first new car in a decade. I'm in need of an SUV (God I hate that term) as i'll be moving in with my missus who has 3 teenagers as well as using it as a workhorse to lug tools etc about as I renovate another property....my current Renault Clo simply doesn't cut it! I've been looking at the new Ford Edge as well as the VW Tourieg do any of you have these? or have similar motors that you'd recommend I test drove before making the decision? Ta Lyonsy

Volvo XC70, doesn't look like a SUV so no mickey-taking, safe as a tank, massive amounts of space, full 4x4, bomb-proof - I'm on my 3rd in 20 years.

I'd never heard of a Ford Edge but having looked it up I see that The Telegraph weren't too impressed [Link] Have you considered a Land Rover Discovery Sport? I was looking for a four wheel drive last summer and the market leader according to almost all of the motoring press was the BMW X3

Dammit, I hate when Hoof is right. Or you can try a Subaru Outback or Forester which have a certain cache and are also bulletproof. Older ones pretty cheap but costly to run. Try the Forester XT, it has a 2.5 litre WRX turbo engine but they don't make them any more. Touaregs are huge. Had one when I was working in Prague, nice car but too big for Croydon.

Ta Lyonsy I would have a Touareg (new shape) if i could have any large, used SUV in the 20-27k price range. As it is i have a relatively new baby.

It depends how much is for family use and how much is carrying tools. You don't want to get a nice shiny Touareg if it is continually get covered it s***. You'd be better geeting something like an Amarok or an L200 I have a Tiguan, the Touareg's baby brother and I love it. If I was going for something bigger I would look at a Disco
