OK - re Hillsborough, and general question also - here we go, HOL'ers - who amongst you/us are, and why? It's not about left and right, in my opinion, it is about who has the funny handshake (and who doesn't). I don't - and I think that those who do are complete plonkers. Show yourselves? Discuss?

I was invited to one of their joining meets once and it was very weird. Lots of moustachioed men calling me brother and telling me if I was ever ill they would come straight round my home to help. I thought the last thing I want if I am ill is you lot around my house. The first paragraph sounds far more homoerotic than it was!

It's always been something very popular amongst the old bill (although much less so now). I've been asked many times and always refused. Just don't really get it and not interested in it to be honest.
Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!! |

I'm not (but then I would say that, wouldn't I ) but both my neighbours were. They belonged to the same lodge, one was a copper (Parks Police) and the other an ex-civil servant. Never approached me as such, but when we moved in and met them, one shook my hand in a funny way and asked if I was "on the square"? WTF I answered? Never mentioned again. However, in their normal life both were decent blokes, one a dyed-in the-wool Tory and the other a Labour supporter. When one had problems the other (and members of the lodge) were there and helped out. Now, maybe they rolled up their trousers, danced around in the moonlight, sacrificed lambs and covered up stuff. On another note - my granddad joined because the Lodge in his town had cheaper beer than any of the pubs!
“My experience of life is that it is not divided up into genres; it’s a horrifying, romantic, tragic, comical, science-fiction cowboy detective novel. You know, with a bit of pornography if you’re lucky." |

My father in law was one up until the 90s as it helped his get work. He also used to be tipped off as to where the police were doing speed checks and (he tells me) the funny handshake got him off being breathalysed. I suspect (hope) that things are a lot more transparent now so that the influence that Masons had has dwindled.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses. |

I have been a mason for 21 years, never seen anything dodgy going on, never benefitted from it financially. My lodge was very diverse in terms of culture and social status & wealth, a very mixed group of people meeting up a few times a year to learn rituals that are centuries old teaching about morality and ethics. The Freemasons are the biggest donators to Charity after the national lottery.

My ex was one for many years. Don't believe all the stories about dodgy dealings..... at the Ladies night one year a Brother, who was an Inland Revenue Tax Inspector went back and checked the records of the band who played at the event. They got done for not declaring their earnings from their playing!

I'm probably way off the mark but it sounds good in terms of karma. I always try to help people out where possible and ask for a favour where it's not too much of an impostion. Not sure I'd be comfortable with any excessive obligation, although I did get a mate a job once and I was quite fortunate that he had the offer revoked, as he later had a few personal issues. Conversely I'd want to get somewhere on my own merit and not have someone regret their endorsement. Overall any organisation that promotes solidarity is postitive especially if it transcends the usual boundaries.

I've never heard of a policeman shaking hands with a driver before breathalysing him
