White boys from poor backgrounds have the lowest attainment levels at GCSE than any other social or ethnic group, according to a new report by the equalities watchdog Apparently because our dads don't all hang out with their union mates.

Failure of society and a politicisation of education. Whilst Thatcher did introduce series changes to education that started the ball rolling (GCSEs etc) its basically the failure of the last five or six governments to actually address education as a function of developing children, rather than as a means of looking good for elections.

The failure of successive governments to improve education standards is a national scandal. It is even more depressing when people use it as a political football.

By all means lay the blame rightfully at mis-management, inequality and ongoing social ills but I can't stand all this ethnic lumping. It's just divisive. Either you come from a good family with positive role models or you don't. Either you want to do well at school or for one reason or another you don't/aren't able to. Either your peers are a good influence or they are not and either you are unlucky enough to have been born poor and probably go to a crap school or you are not. You can't just target whites when it is obvious the problems go beyond skin colour.

Surely there are 3 components here which affect the standard of education. Teachers, facilities/resources and the curriculum. Some teachers aren't very bright themselves and it's claimed they have too much work from too large classes, but isn't what we teach and the way we do it a major factor? It's a big system to shake up.

It's an appaling article, (the Guardian one) not least in that suggests us white working class should just stick together. Clearly also resentment of the fact the posh old boys networks are still stronger than those historically maintained by union members.

I think it curious that all failings of modern Britain are blamed on Maggie. It makes you wonder why she was elected in 1979 - the country must have been a paradise in the seventies. Profitable manufacturing sector, efficient services, high level of home ownership, absolutely no kiddy fiddlers about and you could get a pint in a British pub at anytime of the day.

Personally, I think more damage was actually done under Major and Blair, than Thatcher. Oddly, I think politicians like Thatcher are quite cohesive in that they bring factions of society closer together, admittedly in protest or admiration. The Miners strike, might well have economically sounded the death knell of mining and mining community, but it also rallied them togeather, along with other social movements. In truth, I don't think its Thatcher's fault at all - I'd level the blame at the governments of the 90s and early 2000s. Thatcher brought many people together, as was witnessed with her death and passing. Consumerism of the 90s finally destroyed the idea of youth culture and belonging to society and destroyed the notion of a working class through increasing impoverishment. Some of the issues may have started under Thatcher (housing boom and utility sell offs) but no the governments that followed took action to limit what were by their time obvious problems, in fact they fuelled them and fed on them.

You will find teachers in tough areas confirming that the poor whites are generally doing less well and often more disruptive. We have discussed this at Mapletree Towers due to some direct knowledge of New Addington. I am guessing that the children and grandchildren of immigrants have role models that are highly motivated and competitive. They had the get up and go to emigrate. And most of us have some experience with 'tiger mothers'.
