A friend of my wife gave birth to a daughter around the same time as my son was born. My boy is now two. He is booked in for a private meningitis b vaccine which costs a tidy sum. My 8 month old got it on the NHS. The vaccine ought to be available to all kids but it's not. The catch up programme is limited such that the friends daughter caught it and sadly died at the weekend.

Signed. Particularly close to my heart. I contracted bacterial meningitis at 64 years old. Only saved by prompt action of wife - calling ambulance and the A&E at Epsom General where I spent 3 weeks in ITU and 7 weeks altogether, So lucky-apart from very dicky hearing - made a full recovery. So many kids don't.

Thanks Rob. The petition has been getting thousands of signatures every minute. It passed 100k a few minutes ago so parliament will consider a debate.

Signed. However the cost of the vaccine is presently very high, something like a cost effective price of 80 quid per vaccination, which is why its problematic to vaccinate broadly, even if it would be ideal (long term it would almost eliminate Men B in teenagers - the primary carrier of the disease). In truth, things like this I believe are more worthy of government spending, than commercial interests such as the assorted rail links. Edited by jamiemartin721 (17 Feb 2016 11.22am)

Its a terrible virus / bacterial infection (I think its weirdly both). I used to know a girl who as a result of infection, survived but it all but destroyed her immune system. She got it twice more as a result, and eventually it left her brain damaged.
