I always find it odd that some people describe everyone they know as a 'friend' when most of them are nothing more than mere acquaintances. Ask yourself one simple question: if you were in a very embarrassing hole, would you go to any of these people and trust them to help you out? If the answer is yes, they are friends, if no then just colleagues or acquaintances.

Some are friends, others are colleagues... most are w@nkers! I still have good mates from work who I met in 1980 working for London Life. We relocated to Bristol, set up a football team and had loads in common. Colleagues sign your leaving card and when you look at it years later you struggle to remember them. W@nkers are everywhere.. they're at work, as you travel to work, go to lunch... they are even on here!

If they are workplace I count them as colleagues, even though some are friends, but I do have a hard and fast rule, they go to linkedin and never on Facebook.

They're colleagues until they leave or I leave. Colleagues go on linked in, and if there is a bit more than just people I worked with, they go on facebook. I try to be professional with most people I work with, as its unlikely I'll be working with them for more than a year.

Quite a clear area. Current fashion - deemed correct when speaking, using employer supplied equipment, is colleagues (I am unable to assist you, my colleague will be able to assist) in the UK, or co-worker in the US. I do like to refer to fellow workers I can trust (as you trust friends) as workmates. One legacy from a divided Germany is the use of the work "comrade" as an end of a longer word examples being work-comrade and play-comrade - one more formal than the other.
