Finland is thinking about trialling a system where they give all their citizens an income of 800 Euros a month and scrapping benefits. This was discussed on Newsnight last night and there are some issues with it, but in essence it sounds like a creative and simpler new way of running a nation's finances.

From Forbes Economics & Finance:

Finally, Someone Does Something Sensible: Finland To Bring In A Universal Basic Income

There’s rather a lot of discussion around these days about the merits of a universal basic income. We have, for example, those who tell us that the robots are about to steal all our jobs and therefore we need to tax the capital owners in order to provide that basic income for all. Well, maybe, but it’s not going to work out that way. However, that universal basic income is still a startlingly good idea simply because it’s better than any of the various welfare systems we have at present. But do note: It works by being universal and basic.

so as I understand it, everyone over the age of 18 receives a set amount per month.

All other benefits are scrapped.

Therefore the cost of running the benefits and welfare system are dramatically reduced.

I think the cost of the Finland plan is about the same, but much, much simpler and with added benefits such as encouraging people to work or volunteer without the risk of losing benefits.

Yep. Would also be a lot easier to control immigration I would have thought too if recipients had to be legal citizens/residents.

Be interesting to see how it works if Finland implement it.

Indeed. I believe some areas of The Netherlands are considering trialling it too, as are other places.

Personally I think it's potentially a very good idea which may spread wider if the trials are successful.

I remember a school boy getting onto Nationwide because he won a competition with the same idea.

That was 40 years ago.
