Shootings, explosions and now reports of hostage taking in Paris tonight. At least 18 dead and the tens of thousands of people in the France v Germany game about to tip out on the streets with some c*** driving round shooting people. What a world we live in.

60 people are currently being held hostage in a theatre in the town center. This is going to get worse before it gets better.

Anyone who doesn't believe we are not at war should slowly pull their fingers out of their collective arses.

Anyone who believes that terrorism can be defeated by invading geographic regions with conventional armed forces hasn't been paying attention to history.

So are we or aren't we at war?

I was in Paris in the summer of 2014. I was absolutely shocked at the complete absence of police on the streets. They had machine-gun toting guards around the historic sites, and everything else was left to its own devices (which is why most of Paris is now covered in graffiti). Walking around at night - even on the big, open, well-lit main streets - was a scary experience.

It was more marked because I had just been in London and listened to people complaining about the cameras and the police everywhere. I knew very quickly and unequivocally which I preferred.

No one asked for or deserved to be on the wrong end of the s*** going down in Paris tonight. At the same time, though, they cannot leave the streets unprotected and expect the bad actors not to take advantage.

"The price of peace is eternal vigilance."

Sorry. Maybe a little over-sensitive on my part. "War" gets overused in this regard and leads people to think that it's a good idea to throw troops at the issue (like in Northern Ireland) when, in reality, policing and politics, patience and time is what solves these things.

Death toll up to 35 now. Jeez!
