Caught with alcohol in his car... already done a year prison sentence now faces up to 350 lashes with a whip. Seems barbaric, but that's Sharia Law. He knew what he was doing (he's worked in Saudi for decades) and for me was pretty stupid to commit this offence knowing how harsh their regime is. Apparently he's in ill health, but should we interfere in another country's judicial system? The way UK immigration is going, it won't be long before we are subject to Sharia Law anyway, so discussions like this will be redundant!

Difficult to have too much sympathy, to be honest. Lived there for 25 years, knows the law, a bit late to object to it once you've been caught. Of course it's barbaric and over the top to us, but he was happy to live there and earn the money and enjoy the lifestyle - as with living in any country you take the good with the bad. As an aside, while I have little sympathy, I do hope they commute the sentence.

I might be going to work out there funny enough. They tend to tolerate alcohol on the assorted ex-pat compounds, but anywhere else is well established crime. That said, being caught outside the compound with booze, especially home made booze is a massive error of judgement. A consequence of this, is that Bahrain is often full of Saudi's knocking back a few drinks, because well its a stupidly absurd religious rule about enforcing morality on others (and you'll find a lot of Saudi's outside Saudi Arabia like their Whiskey). The embassy should do all than can for him (although the 350 lashes aren't delivered in one session).

It makes a big difference, 350 lashes would kill most people (it'd probably kill the bloke administering them as well). I suspect that it'll be closer to 20 with the rest suspended. Its barbaric, true but usually the Embassy manages to get them commuted or significantly reduced.
