Always first floor. Better to look down on people than up. If you get a noisy neighbour above you then it can be irritating.

I'd say this too, plus less chance of a break in.

In my experience, first floor.

Ground floor flats tend to be the ones that get burgled, plus heat rises, so its usually a bit more convenient in terms of heating to be the upstairs flat.

Also you tend to get less 'street problems' like people pissing in your doorway, kebabs thrown at the window, and most useful door to door c**ts tend to be less inclined to go to the upper tier (of course if your front door is on the ground floor its virtually no value).

The grief tends to be, as Nick said, getting your stuff in, but this also equates into making it much harder for pikey little scuffs to get your stuff out (and of course its a lot harder to get in through a window, if its on the first floor).

Downsides, water pressure can be a c**t, but often if its a converted property, if your upstairs you don't get the water bill either.

Also in my experience its better to have noisy downstairs neighbors than upstairs. Easier to drown out, and you can't generally hear them banging one another.
