"I'm not over the limit, it's my diabetes." It's bad enough the RMT defend those who fail breath tests, but to vote for strike action over it (again) is absurd.

Checked this and confirmed that some kinds of diabetes can produce false positive results on breath tests. This doesn't prove he wasn't drunk, but it explains the trade unions have an argument.

Not on that machine, and he failed it twice. The transport authority said it had explored in detail the suggestion that diabetes could affect the breathalyser result, but concluded that the type of test it used was not affected by acetone, which is produced in the bloodstream of people with the condition.

I hope people take this sort of archaic Union practice into account when they talk about renationalising the railways.

Here's an objective view then. The underground system is completely emasculated by a mixture of poor management and extraordinarily dated Union philosophy. I object strongly to the no compulsory redundancies concept resulting in people sitting in their gardens for years. The Union activists would fight their own shadows. They have a ridiculously cushy life and won't let it go easily. Every chance they get to milk the situation they do so with no feeling of guilt. And they like to make sure management know how powerful they are by calling action on a regular basis, using spurious logics in their - perfectly rational and perfectly selfish - power games. We all suffer from this monopoly. If this were a market economy instead of a closed shop it would look so very different.

Thanks for printing the transport authorities subjective opinion, but i was talking about an objective view. They saw the "excuse" coming. Next time they should just shop them to the police and haul them off for a blood test and bit of downtime.
