Gray's son is a Labour activist campaigning in Uxbridge, you couldn't make it up

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.

Ms Gray, having experienced at first hand the tories behaviour during partygate, has gone for 'the cleaner alternative'.

Civil servants of whatever grade very rarely get anywhere near cabinet meetings or briefings. That is the proviso of ministers and SPADS (who are political appointees and wield a lot of influence. I can say that from experience.

Sue Gray has served at a high level across all governments of all colours and was appointed by Boris as she had the reputation of being more than happy to ask questions to power whoever they were. No one in the Tory party objected to her appointment or at the time suggested her report was anything other than fair. Hindsight is a marvelous thing.

She has not actually taken the job with the labour party yet. She is waiting for an independent panel to clear it.

For Starmer it makes sense to bring her in. Like it or not it looks like he w stands a good chance of being the next PM and to have someone who knows the Whitehall machine can only be good for the country of he becomes PM.

A good post if I compare it with my experiences.

Senior Civil Servants, or the majority of those I have encountered in my professional career certainly, more often than not subscribe to machiavellian self-servitude as opposed to any particular political allegiance in order to progress. For that reason alone I would suggest Sue Gray's loyalty will lie where it would appear to best benefit her beyond anything else and would be less concerned with anything suggesting otherwise.

Her knowledge of the Whitehall machine will certainly be of benefit to anybody looking to employ her therefore she probably is fair game. All subjective conjecture from me of course I suppose time will tell.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Jacob Rees-Mogg calls Sue Gray ‘conniving friend of the socialists’

This is becoming immensely enjoyable....

My Mrs is a civil servant, recently joined from the private sector. She can't get over how many incompetent people there are and those with no interest in working hard or a desire to achieve or accomplish anything. Never mind the amount of money that is wasted, the old boys mentality and how women are treated.

The depressing thing is that there aren't enough good apples to change the current ethic and ways of doing things. She'll be heading back to the private sector soon to be amongst ambitious people who are driven to make a change in a healthy work environment.

What your post, and indeed the whole premise of the thread, fails to recognise is also some of the amazing talent within the CS. For example, clearly todays Anglo/French summit was a major success after the disaster years of Johnson and Truss. Who does all the behind the scenes leg work in making such events a success -highly skilled Civil Servants. Indeed, if you look at the photos from earlier you will see the British Ambassador to France right alongside Sunak as a central player and also Tim Barrow - the man who apparently brokered the recent deal associated with the protocol and a civil servant of vast experience/expertise.

So, to characterise the whole of the CS as "a farce" is clearly so far off the mark as to be absurd. It might also be worth remembering that it was Simon McDonnell who Boris Johnson got rid of after years in the FCO, who actually called him out for his claims of being unaware of the history of Chris Pincher which ultimately led to his downfall. McDonnell confirmed that he had personally briefed Johnson in full.

Another similar example was the decision of Liz Truss to dispense with the senior official in the Treasury - Tom Scholar - who she saw as a blocker to her views; look how well that turned out!

Of course, as in any organisation, the CS can be improved. However, it is worth remembering that it is universally admired world wide and it depends a lot on good political leadership - sadly lacking in the UK for at least a decade.

One final point; the UK press was forever going on about the size of the EU's bureaucracy. In fact, the Commission is about the size of the UK Home Office - not the vast bureaucracy that is claimed.
