Fascinating! Of course, the origins of both Penge & Selhurst refer to their respective places in the Great North Wood which subsequently gave it's name to the various Norwoods.

Crawley's name is derived from the Anglo Saxon crawe leah meaning a 'crow infested clearing' Gatwick : Its name derives from the Old English gāt (goat) and wīc (dairy farm); i.e. "goat farm". Heathrow or Heath Row was a wayside hamlet along a minor country lane called Heathrow Road in the ancient parish of Harmondsworth, Middlesex, Stansted was a Saxon settlement (the name means 'stony place' in Anglo-Saxon) that predates the Norman conquest. Luton......Lea Town....Lea = Loo....for any large body of water. Seems appropriate Edited by PalazioVecchio (21 Jan 2023 5.50pm)

Wallington, where I originated, was, as I understand it, once a walled in town. I woke one day to find that the word woke, which is the past participle of the period following sleep, means something quite different these days. How that happened and what it is intended to mean I fail to understand. Just stupid. A tow rag is typically a reference to a low life scumbag today. The term originated in the Navy as a reference to a long piece of rope with a rag tied to it which was trailed in the water from the bow of a ship. The rag was used by sailors to clean up after using the ship's toilet (or head in Naval terms).
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

Utopia is 'nowhere' in ancient Greek, and a robot is a slave in Czech (anyone who has to work for nothing - 'robota' is drudgery).

into the old Celtic languages.....Selhurst is etymologically connected to willow from whence we get 'Sally Rod' ..an irish Cane of chastisement. and it is true...we have caned many teams who visited us and were naughty enough to deserve punishment. Less of the clack of leather on willow. More willow on flesh. [Link] Palace Palatine Hill.....
