I'm finding it pretty hard to work out exactly what we need. I'm thinking we need two CDs, a central midfielder and one, maybe two wingers at least. We're OK up front: Benteke, Ayew, Mateta. Am I missing something? I could easily be forgetting someone. As I think about it I had forgotten Banks, but the question doesn't change really.

It's a question of what we mean by 'need'. People go on about how many first teamers we've let go, but let's face it, most of them failed to contribute to any significant extent last season. For example:
- Hennessey and Henderson weren't needed in the main part of the season
- Wickham and Sakho spent most of the season on the treatment table
- Dann did feature but showed that despite his best efforts he's passed it at this level.
- McCarthy was injured for much of the season
- Cahill missed half the season through injury
- As for PvA, he struggled to keep his place ahead of Mitchell.

For me the minimum requirement re new players (assuming Zaha stays) is
- 2 new CDs, one of which should have some pace. One should be young.
- 1 so-called box-to-box midfielder.
- 1 wide player to replace Townsend which should be enough with Banks and Rak-Sakyi hopefully in the first team squad.

An early season line-up could look like this:

Guaita or Butland depending on PV's preference

Ward
Tomkins
Nelsson (from FC Copenhagen)
Mitchell

Kouyate
Gallagher (from Chelsea)

Zaha
Olise
Schlupp

Benteke

Subs
Guaita/Butland, New CB, Kelly, Riedewald, Hannam, McArthur, Milivojevic, Ayew, Mateta

This season is about balancing the wage bill that was running at iro 95 % of all income, which by any stretch of the imagination is completely unsustainable regardless of the 50mill c19 hit.

Assuming , All but Ward, and maybe 1 other is resigning then it may cut 40 mill from the wage bill with maybe 2 or 3 signings coming in ..

No easy answers but the days of palace paying bit part players 100k or even 60k a week seems gone .. as Townsend and co are starting to realise .. they are not worth 4 mill a year to any team.

Agree with you Kev. As my possible early season teamsheet shows (I hope) we don't NEED much more provided we get 2 CBs and a decent midfielder. And the new squad's weekly outgoings will be significantly less than last year's.

Gallagher would be ace but not sure we'd be able to get that over the line except as a loan deal. Think he's still highly rated there.

Have we blotted our copybook with Chelsea with Bats? Perhaps they aren't concerned with lack of minutes there.

Could we sign Gallagher with Mateta already here? Otherwise this made me feel a lot more confident about us.

Enjoying getting up later and not having someone who knows better than me (apart from the missus of course).
