So whilst waiting for our new manager to emerge, I thought I'd do some number crunching on old managers of the past that I've witnessed. The criteria they must have been managers since 1960, They must have managed or co managed for more than 20 games. To even things up I've given a win as 3 points (for the youngsters a win used to be 2 points). This is Ave points per game. I wanted to have the points system for league games only but couldn't find a suitable breakdown so this is based on total games played, not broken down into league and cups. 1) Dave Bassett 1.70 Now I know they were in different leagues, interesting though, some managers were much higher or lower than I expected.

Yes I agree with you I'm surprised at some of them.. Trevor Francis for example I'm shocked to see in joint 9th... My memories of his tenure is seeing us play some of the worst football I've seen.. I'm also surprised not to see Steve Bruce on that list.. Or was it that he managed us for less than 20 games??... My memory isn't what it uses to be!!
Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!! |

Your memory is correct Steve Bruce did have a very good average 1.94 but only managed 18 games.

That's interesting, but I think there is such a vast difference between managing Palace in the top flight and in the second that my mind instantly begins trying to split the list into those two categories. That becomes extremely complicated given a few names on the list managed us in both divisions of course (some in three I believe?). If we were being really clever we could compare points won to money spent, though we'd need to adjust for inflation somehow, and would perhaps be better off comparing points won to squad value, as some of our best players have been those we paid little or nothing for, whilst some of our better managers have had to pick the bones out of expensive mistakes made before they arrived. In other words, establishing who our best managers have been is probably beyond maths and science, and very much a subjective call. Which is exactly how it should be I'd reckon, though your table will doubtless be cited as Exhibit A in a good few discussions!

Good work but I think I would only include games in the top flight for your comparison.
