Looks like they did the double over us. We had a good start, certainly some high scoring games.

Yes. It was the next season!

A great thread to read up on, chaps.
I'm a Jonny-come-lately compared to most posters here as my first game wasn't until 1978 (I was 10).
Clearly too young to have seen Jonny Byrne play in the flesh but I remember him waving to us on the pitch at half-time to rapturous applause in the league cup game against Southend where Wright & Bright both scored hat tricks in an 8-0 win.
When he was introduced over the loud speaker, bloke behind me said "WHO?" and immediately his pal said "You're not much of a Palace fan if you don't know who Jonny Byrne is."
I think he's still the only England player ever to be selected from the fourth tier (or is it the third tier?)
As Palace players don't get selected nowadays even in the top tier, that's an amazing stat.

Johnny Byrne had 2 spells with us, nearly 250 apps and 90 goals.
Us aged folk remember him with great affection!
Sadly he passed away in S.Africa aged only 60. RIP.

I believe he won FA Cup with West Ham in 1964, but I may be wrong

Only played 11 games for England, scoring 8 goals. How he never played at World Cup is staggering

You are right. That is the only Cup Final I have seen in the flesh Preston fielded Howard Kendall who was 16 yrs old at the time.

Something I don't remember. A 20 match run without a win. It spanned the last 13 matches of the 61/62 season and the first 7 matches of the 62/63 season.
If I take it further there was just 1 win in 28 matches.

The past wasn't all goodness and light!
