4231 would work fine if we have a manager that will play it, 3 at the back was the end of De Boer before he even started, we just don't have good enough CBs to play it.

Played 4 2 3 1 against wolves won, pretty sure against Newcastle and won aswell, okay zaha injured but went back to 442 against Leeds and Burnley look terrible, then we play Brighton, look terrible but we score from a cross from ayew on the right and Townsend on the left we then play Fulham and put Townsend back on the right and ayew back on the left so even when Roy finds something that has some form of attacking success he then proceeds to change it back and treat us all to a 0-0 vs Fulham.

We do have Cahill, Tomkins, Sakho, Dann, Kelly, Kouyate, Woods, so more than the average club. Now whether they are fit or good enough is a different matter. What standard do you have to be to play that shape?

There's no alternative to being fit enough and good enough of course, but on top of that I feel they need to be mobile enough for the system too, and that lot aren't (apart from maybe Kouyate).

Townsend put in one (half) decent ball from the left against Brighton, and a stream of very good crosses from the right against Fulham. Benteke just didn't do anything with them.

Oh he was still be far our best player but that's not really saying much, let's be fair most of the season he has been pretty ineffective doing his usual cut in onto his left only to get closed down blocked or just pass it back centrally and bentekes movement was terrible and Hodgson keeps him on for the full 90

Interesting first post. Does a manager look at the players available and then decide on the formation or does he have a fixed idea about what formation to play and then look at the players to make it work? Against Brighton and Fulham we just looked disconnected. Even watching Southampton lose last night, you could see that the players had some idea who would be where as a move developed. I just despair of our ever being so fluent. I'd go with 4-2-3-1 in front of Guaita. Were the players available: Clyne, Tomkins, Cahill, van Aanholt It looks defensive as a set up for a home game, but against one of the top teams there's a case for it anyway. But unless there is a 'connect' between Riedewald and Kouyate and the three in front of them then nothing good can follow. I just think Riedewald's a good player. Technically sound if one-paced, reads the game well, can pass the ball and break- up play.
