that was Andros's fault for ball watching. Mitchell makes a tackle and the ball squirms away to an unmarked Veltman who scores. As a wing back surely Andros should have been covering. Agreed, Andros fails to spot the runner behind him. Our defence though is a drift defence which leaves gaps at the far post as our full backs get sucked across. Mitchell was virtually on the penalty spot when he makes that tackle which should normally be centre half territory. I think someone has already posted on a different thread there is very little talking on the pitch. If someone was screaming at Andros maybe that goal could have been averted, but yes Andros should have been more alert.

Townsend gave an interview after the game holding up his hands and admitting he lost his man for the goal.

PVA's defending and positional sense is really poor, but that overlap he does when attacking is fantastic. These days the full back role should offer attacking options too, but with the exception of PVA all our full backs are unable to provide an effective overlap and/or a first time whipped in cross

Regardless of who was meant to mark who, when the opposition has 70% possession, at some point even a sold defense will crack, either by fluke, genius or error. I thought there was a deflection in the build up which put everyone on the wrong foot.

Mitchell must have to do more defending than any other left-back in the PL. Teams always seem to target that area when playing us. I think with better protection from midfield and/or quicker centre-backs he might look more solid. As it is, whoever plays in the full-back positions generally have little protection and the likes of AWB do not come along every day. With PvA set to depart it'll be interesting to see how the club replace him.

When defending in the way we were Monday night , which was very deep, it is an absolute for your full backs to be in the six yard box to block, that leaves space,, that has to be covered . Mitchell , did nothing wrong, If Townsend had not got carried away watching Brighton, trying to smash the door down. He could have stopped their goal.

Mitchell will improve - he has a great attitude. He impresses most for me when he fights to win back the ball upfield when our attackers have lost possession, and gives the ball straight back to them. He is still a bit too raw to be first choice left back, and he will need to add more to the attacking side of his game, but he will get his head down and apply himself. We don't need a major signing at left back, just enough to provide competition as another poster said.
