I hope that those happy with our win don't get carried away and believe we have turned the corner.

Apart from Eze's wonder goal I didn't see much constructive about our play to believe we'll succeed in our next upcoming league and cup fixtures.

There was precious little intelligent movement or ideas up front and no one, apart from Eze, capable or skilful enough to bring the ball forward to allow Benteke or Zaha to find space.

In recent years our lack of goals has been blamed on inefficient strikers but the real culprit has been the lack of midfield control and creativity.

Until this is rectified we shall continue to sit in the lower half of the table.

Agreed we need to upgrade our midfield.

Yes we know-it-all goes on, but it really shouldn't. For someone to openly say this - and for it to get absolutely no coverage or comment is disgraceful.
Imho, intentional fouling is one of the worst things about the game, alongside diving. The FA should at the very least condemn these comments. And even take some form of action against them.

That's what really irks me about that episode. Lineker has shown himself to be all too ready to publicly stick his oar in about matters that have nothing to do with his job as a very highly paid football pundit. But when there's a football topic on which he has a duty to comment, he's too cowardly to take a stand.

Yes, this is a very good summary of where we are and it will hopefully keep our feet on the ground, the lack of creativity in mid field is a big concern as is the RB position. We do need wing backs with pace so that they can get back quickly when needed. The striker role is also something that needs sorting, Benteke will never be a good striker again come what may, he lacks the mobility, positioning awareness and pace of a modern day striker he just needs to go!

You have to be having a laugh, apparently on MOTD they had one shot cleared off the line but how on earth does a player who's standing in front of our keeper who uses his legs to block the shot with our keeper in perfect line to stop it anyway constitute off the line? stupidly nuts, once again I'll remind you that we were fouled eighteen times and that doesn't include the ones we didn't get, how many of those were to stop us attacking? ...also one of their players actually said that we should've hacked Eze down to stop him scoring!

Football needs to introduce a form of the sinbin to stop teams cheating every single time they are outpaced or just purely beaten during build up play, it is destroying our game, in he old days teams would be allowed to carry on and if that happened yesterday we may have been able to utilise about four occasions where we managed to pick the ball up after the foul, but you and everyone understands how every team is then afforded to get into position to defend as a whole unit once the foul has been given and everyone knows that is a lot easier to defend then when running back towards your goal!

No I’m not having a laugh as you obviously didn’t get my drift. How many goal scoring chances did we create apart from the two goals we scored bearing in mind the second was all down to Eze’s skill with no one else involved.I will repeat as you found it hard to understand was if we had gone more gun ho we may have scored more goals but left ourselves more open to concede the odd goal and not kept the very important clean sheet which we ended up keeping comfortably!!

I'm laughing at you because you obviously didn't notice how they stopped us playing and attacking with their fouling, some fans lol

Well we know you won’t be getting carried away. You wouldn’t get carried away in a hot air ballon full of helium.

Unlikely (imo) given who we are. Our inconsistency is surely legend. Hence we never turn corners; we just flatter to deceive and then pull out unexpected good performances and results.

Example from our recent games:
Two poor results against Burnley and Newcastle are followed by 3 decent ones (with decent performances) against WBA, Spurs and W. Ham; then two embarrassments before two solid performances against Leicester and Sheff U. As for the Sheff U result don't forget that Citeh, Liverpool, Manure and Arsenal only beat the Blades by a SINGLE goal this season!

What will the Arsenal and Citeh games bring? Who knows? On paper we should lose them both (and may well do). However, we are on a four game unbeaten league run against the Gunners and came away from the last two Etihad trips unbeaten with a win (the only team that year to take points of Citeh at their place) and a draw. We are quite capable of repeating these results and equally capable of being thrashed.

Thank you to everyone who posted links to the 5-1 win over Sheffield United in 1971, and the other 1970s goals. It was great to see those two fabulous goals from John Hughes and John McCormick again.

I also enjoyed seeing John Sewell's goal against Leeds in the last minute. We were one down and Sewell just lobbed the ball in. I thought it was such a waste of an attacking opportunity and was swearing like hell but then Gary Sprake let it through his hands for a goal and Johnnie boy was a hero!
