I don't agree with extending the contract of a failure just to preserve their transfer value. For one thing it sends the wrong message to the squad, and for another I just can't see that the maths work. Even if we give someone like Meyer a two year deal on 'only' 30k p/w, we've invested up to £3.1m. In a post-covid world, a player who has done nothing for three years is going to do well just to get a free transfer somewhere. We certainly won't make a profit. On the other hand, and as tempting as it is to clear out a load of 'deadwood', I completely agree that you need a replacement first. Cahill, Kelly and especially Ward should all be retained - that would save us millions in transfer fees for new players. Finally, don't forget the possibility of keeping a player but on lower wages. They might not like taking a massive pay cut, but if our contract offer is no worse than anything they can get elsewhere they would probably opt to stay. I did see a rumour that was what happened with Benteke, and might be an option for Sakho who, Chelsea game aside, has his uses but is just overpaid. For me, we should release Wickham and Meyer regardless of anything else, but all the others could be retained if others in their positions aren't, or replacements aren't signed - and replacements should only be signed if they represent an upgrade. Otherwise keep who we have. Edited by TheBigToePunt (28 Oct 2020 10.53am) Agree with the comments regarding Benteke and Wickham’s contracts although I suspect the real reason they were renewed was to maintain adequate squad numbers / cover rather than shell out on new players.

I heard that we have the option of another year for Vicente, by which point he'll be 35 (I think). We need to get Sakho, Bentenke and Wickham off the books as between them they are costing us around 250k per month and none of them are managing to stay fit, or offer much of a contribution and are not young enough to suggest a significant turnaround. Bentenke could still find form with the euros and his contract expiring being a motivation, but I still think we need to say goodbye. I'd keep Meyer if he'll stay. If Roy goes the next manager may find a way of bringing him into the team. I still think he has plenty of quality, just not in our current system. Also, he's young enough to have resale value if it doesn't work out over the next couple of years. Personally though I think he'll run down his contract. He looks miserable in training and when he was unhappy at Schalke he did the same thing. Meyer looks quite tidy on the ball but IMO only has a short give and go type pass in his locker and I don’t see that he has a position in any set up. He’s had runs of games on the left side of a three man midfield and failed to make an impact in most of those. Looks very poor out of possession and therefore couldn’t be played holding centre mid. Lacks the turn of foot and strength to escape his man and doesn’t appear to have much of shot in his locker either so IMO couldn’t play as an attacking midfield player or number 10 either. On the latter point the game has changed so much in the last five years I can’t think of many teams who truly play with a number 10 these days anyway ?

Sakho is now 5th choice centre back and on massive wages. Definitely needs to go but will no doubt run down his contract and go back to France in the summer. Benteke - now 4th choice striker, even on lower wages can't see it being less than c£80k a week so no point renewing. Will leave next summer if not before Meyer - has a pass in him but overall very disappointing and c6th choice centre mid now. A loan back to Germany in Jan. Else leave next summer for free. Wickham - why bother renewing him. The ACL injury was unfortunate but how many muscles injuries does this guy get? Can't see him going to Championship in Jan as wages will still be high. A free next summer most likely. Agree with earlier post - Kelly, Jeffrey and Macca all 1 year extensions last summer. Even with these 3 staying there will be a lot of turnover next summer, including a new manager

Meyer doesn't work brilliantly in a successful Roy team. A successful Roy team has great shape, defends robustly, and breaks in a rudimentary, loe-risk fashion. Meyer works in a dominant team. Which is why he gets brought on late in games we're chasing when Roy is willing to let us try and play on the front foot. He'll go back to Germany to a team aspiring to Champions League football and reflect on three wasted years. Tragic.
If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities. |

Unfortunately, he lacks pace, not a great tackler and is easily out muscled. 3 things you need in a defensive, counter attacking side. Did we not watch any videos before investing about £20m over 3 years in him?
