I have just read on the CPFC Official site about rule changes for the 20/21 season. It appears VAR can still rule for a toe nail being offside. Am I right?

Always remembering walking from the Holmesdale to the Whitehorse end at half time!

Exactly my thoughts when I read it. The official line:

Offsides: The protocol does not allow for tolerance levels.

Which is absolute bs because it tries to make out that it's 100% accurate yet the whole technology relies upon an objectively selected frame of when the ball was kicked. Which can clearly vary from one situation to the next. They've had so much time to try and come up with a few tweaks to the system and instead it'll be the same stupid decisions.

One positive at least is use of the monitor is encouraged.

A 14cm ‘margin of error’ and as has been rightly pointed out above, human input (judgement/error) thrown into the mix to decide when to freeze frame the video....just ridiculous how it can be used to try and adjudicate over such fine margins!

14cm is several toe nails which is better than one but you are right about when you freeze the frame.

It is time they sorted out what is handball too. Again the verbatim report was hardly clear. The goal disallowed against Villa was a travesty. Still it helps the refs are being encouraged to make the ultimate decision by reference to their screen.

I can see the VAR debate raging for quite some time yet.

The basic principle should be that the referee is in sole charge and is responsible for final decisions - not another ref. in a padded room.
This has been just as contentious as the 'toenail' off sides.

Therefore it is very welcome that instead of being discouraged to consult the pitch side monitor they are now told to fall in line with the rest of Europe and
check anything and everything themselves.

The FA had some funny ideas about the roles of VAR
last season so at least that is being put right.
