It appears that Spurs are looking at Tyrick Mitchell. He sits on the bench here and doesn't get a look in. Yet we highly rate him apparently and it would appear Spurs do too. If he is given the chance to sit on the bench at Palace or at Spurs and, maybe, get a run out in the cups and Europa League with Spurs, which is he going to choose. For heaven's sake Roy, give him a couple of games and encouragement to him and the other young players coming through. We are already about to lose Jadon Raymond. How many more young players will we lose to other clubs if we are not prepared to give them a chance.

Exactly... He only puts them in when he has no choice... look at Wan Bissaka... got to give him a go before the end of the season....I’d like to see Riedewald given a run too....

How many youngsters have we not played since we have been in the prem who have gone on to prove that decision wrong?

I really hope that Mitchell does break through & add his name to AWB as a post-admin academy success. You need to bear in mind that he is still only 20, was and is being brought into the first team picture, suffered a nasty injury and is currently behind a Dutch international who there was talk of £25m offers from big clubs for. I’d expect he will get some playing time in the remainder of the season & it'd be great to see him emerge as PVA's successor.

Agree re: Riedewald. Hopefully in midfield rather than at left back (he has played a European final with Ajax there!)

There has certainly been a pattern in respect of youngsters and their progress , or lack of it.

How often have we been told we have a great prospect on our hands? They play in the academy X1 or Under 23s, or whatever, perhaps get a sub. appearance in the league cup or in a pre-season friendly. We then see them shipped out to a League 1 or 2 club, to man them up so to speak. After 6 months they return without having made any real impact. The next thing you know is they are on the list of released players.

AWB was obviously an exception but one wonders if we hadn't had a serious bout of injuries amongst our defenders where he might be now.

i think he has got a future within the 1st team squad...PVA contract up next summer so maybe he seen as natural replacement, free & 50k a week cheaper.

loan move to champ next season then put him in.

you cant drop PVA who is very good just because a good kid is coming thru, he needs to be patient for another season.

i wouldnt be suprised if PVA took a bosman for his last big contract.

Is he LB? Fantastic.

Agree need to field these talented kids but disagree the tenor of the OP which infers that just coz spuds stick a cheeky bid in we will sell to the first bidder. The club has more sense and will sell after he has enhanced his value and not to tight wads like spuds.

You really answered your own question in your post.

Managers are loathed to play youngsters due to lack of experience. This has really been the case since the demise of reserve team football, which was fairly physical and competitive. The academy games are fairly low level contact, so the leap to first team football is too great.
This therefore leads to youngsters being loaned out for experience in lower leagues. If they don't impress there, why would they do well in the Premier? So, they get released.
Only the really exceptional players will make it through with this system, which makes you wonder why we are spending loads of money on the academy, when there isn't a clear route to the first team.
The Chelsea model is a good example, they have loaned out dozens of young players, but only very few make the first team RLC is considered and England player more than a Chelsea player, Mount had to go to Derby to get some game time.
