I'm surprised he's not playing somewhere - thought that was what he wanted.

I think the modern idea that someone should just be turfed out at the end of a career is wrong. Jules played magnificently for the club over many years, showed a great loyalty and affection for fans and was well liked by playing staff. This is the type of person the club should be investing in. I don't know the ins and outs but a successful organisation requires loyal, hard working and reliable staff. Jules has shown all of this and I'm sure he would show his commitment to the club in the way that he worked. Yes, we can go about hiring and firing people but then where is the continuity, the loyalty, the connection to staff, players and the club? We can hire someone but who is to say that person won't just up and leave at the drop of a hat or show any commitment to the club or desire for the club to do well.
Organisiations that just hire and fire, replacing, choppping and changing for the sake of it seems to be the modern way and success at all costs is the name of the game. I think that you can be successful by properly investing in people, especially people who are invested in the club. Jules has lots of experience, was one of the best goalkeepers in both the premier and championship during his time. How many other keepers can we hire to train others with his level of experience. Not many as there aren't many to begin with and of those that there are who would be willing to do the job? None of them will have the loyalty to the club that Jules would have done.
Like I said I don't know the ins and outs so if as DE says he diodn;t have the proper qualificatios then I guess it's fair do's but hey I think the club should try and give someone like Jules, a club legend a role if possible just to have someone there who fans can relate to and who is likely going to give his all to ensure the club does well.

Man is the most insane species. He worships an invisible God and destroys a visible Nature. Unaware that this Nature he’s destroying is this God he’s worshipping.

Does anyone know with any certainty whether Jules took the coaching badges that seem to be required when going into that side of the game ? I think its UEFA A & B (But could be wrong) if he didnt have them or wasnt working on them perhaps that limited what roles the club could offer.

Would love to see him back and hope we did treat him well. If he wanted to keep playing and wasn't offered a playing role at another Premier League club then it probably wasn't right to keep him as a player at Palace, either, and I'm sure that Roy would have over-ruled Dougie if he had really wanted him to stay. If the club offered him an ambassador role that sounds like a chance was there for him to remain at the club which he didn't want. It may not sound a great role but I think Mark Bright initially had a similar role and it has developed into something much more substantial, so the same could easily have happened with Julian. Palace seem to have a record of treating their former players well so it surprises me that someone of such importance to the club might have been treated badly.

Possibly Palace told him they'd welcome him back in any capacity when he was interested in helping out. After a long career, he may have wanted a season or two just to enjoy life without commitments.
