I've always been a bit mystified by Freedman's departure for Bolton.

The consensus has always been that it was simply money.

Perhaps it was, but given that we were just topping the Championship with a side that included several shrewd signings of his, plus his own long association with the Palace, it did seem odd to leave at that point. It's not as if Bolton were a big club.

I am sure we'd all like to know the full story and whether it was just the lure of filthy lucre or whether there was something else that made him jump ships.

Parish was not prepared to offer a better contract, financially and longevity. That season started off on rocky foundations, carpark chats etc.

Bolton came along with a better offer, both financially, longevity and also, bolton is closer to Scotland, one would imagine that's a plus.

Also, a lot of managers have had issue with Parish, maybe Freedman didn't feel the love, regardless of it being there or not.

But let's be real. If someone offers you a contract, of 2 million, for two years.... I think it would be hard for anyone to turn down.

What I want to know more about, is the texting situation and Malky Mackay and Moodie

Apparently Freedman disagreed with Parish over Zaha leaving that season or at the end of it. Thing is Zaha had a say on that anyway with player power in modern football.

I get the feeling Freedman might have felt pressure to (actually try) to get promotion that season when Freedman probably didn’t perhaps plan for promotion that season anyway, before we restarted again the next season without Zaha. Of course the money and their setup was miles ahead of us at the time but he seemed to ignore that they were incurring debt fast and that meant he couldn’t sign pricey players there either.

All very misjudged. He suddenly found the few vital jigsaw pieces to his 4-2-3-1. But he had a few tough years budget wise at Palace and then had a club that had been in the prem for a decade wanting him. He could have beaten us to 6th place I think if he didn’t draw on the final day of the season, but that was his football. More suitable for a relegation threat in the prem.

During a previous interview DF said the then-Bolton owner: "Done me like a kipper."

He added that he felt terrible driving north to Bolton, but had felt like "King Kong" when dealing with Parish and that he could achieve anything.

DF then confirmed he knew he'd made a terrible mistake leaving CPFC while taking his first Bolton training session.

It's worth remembering, of course, that he took virtually all the coaching staff with him and left Palace in quite a hole albeit, I seem to recall, they got good compensation from Bolton.
Anyway, its history now and personally I think he is doing a very decent job in his current role.Equally, it would never surprise me if he was the next Palace manager - despite all the sudden talk about Dyche.

I always assumed he clashed with Parish over tactics. We had started the season with 3 defeats playing turgid football and SP demanded more attacking flair. DF reluctantly agreed but his nose had been put out of joint

DF was certainly responsible for some of the most boring football I have seen before the final season when things clicked after a poor start.

Parish did clash with DF over tactics, especially as Parish knew it was Zaha’s last season and our chance for a serious promotion challenge. They also clashed behind closed doors over Zaha leaving. That move to Man Utd didn’t happen or get negotiated over a few days. There were a few things that Freedman couldn’t argue against now.

We were losing £5 mil a year.
Zaha wanted to go.
It would be our one chance at a promotion push.
We were ready if we had another wide player. (We then bought Bolasie. Was he doing tricks in that car park?)

Freedman possibly thought if we didn’t go up that promotion chance wouldn’t come again at Palace. He made the wrong decision.

That’s my take on it with hearing there was (an expected) disagreement shall we say over Zaha planned to leave.
