Clearly I am in the minority regarding Ward. Depends if you consider Ward playing well is " premiership quality " which I accept is a loose term. In terms of defending and tackling I would suggest that a fit on form Ward would be possibly half as effective as a fit on form AWB , if that is true then it's a substantial reduction in defending capability. It's an opinion only

I may be in the minority here but I would rather have an average right back (and IMO Ward is just that, a good solid player, but nothing more) and have the money to spend on a quality winger who could light up that side of the field and cause the opposition such problems that they have little opportunity to expose Ward. Carrasco may be the answer to this, someone like Sarr, perhaps others. A lack of a natural wide replacement for Townsend has caused as many problems as a lack of RB replacement for Ward. Ideally, of course get both, but if I was given a choice I would get a winger in this window.

Ward is not a top Premier League right back, but is a Premier level right back, because if I look at Femenia or Elmohamady or Lowton or Byram or some other right back in the league, I think he can stay in that group without shame... Edited by Ian-VI (27 Jan 2020 1.47pm)

Ideally we'd have both but given the quite good possibility we have neither I am more inclined to bringing in some attacking reinforcement. We hardly create anything and barely score and are only surviving on being able to keep the game tight. Without sweeping changes we will stay the same so extra firepower up front would certainly improve us better than another defender.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

Assuming Kyle Peters goes to Southampton - Nathan Ferguson from WBA is a must signing Failure to sign a RB and further reinforcements will make me fear of DF and SP plunging the club into an avoidable relegation struggle rather than pushing up the league table - so hears hoping !!

If the other owners wanted to buy out Long they should have done it with their own funds, injecting more money into the club, not with the AWB proceeds. Originally posted by Painter
The club didn't have £50m to spend from AWB sales as you say, an element of the fee was used to buy Martin Longs shares and repay directors loans.

Hopefully Ferguson will be done and we will have a better right back than our current options. Edited by HKOwen (29 Jan 2020 11.10pm)
