Agree. With the Peter Robinson series of Inspector Banks novels a close second. For Sussex based readers "The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists" by Robert Tressel. My favourite novel and is set in Hastings Continuing along the sussex theme the Roy Grace series by Peter James are well worth a go. I will admit to being a fan of Lee Childs books and those by Andy Mcnab. No book snob am i.
