Phil Chess, who founded Chess Records in 1947 with his brother Leonard, died on Tuesday.

Artists on the label included Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Sonny Boy Williamson, Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry. One of the greatest record labels of all time, without Chess the British blues boom of the early sixties wouldn't have happened, so no Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, Animals etc etc.

RIP Phil

I doubt even Phil Chess himself could have foreseen just what an impact Chess Records would later have on the music world after its foundation nearly 70 years ago. While I was sorry to hear of his death, I am glad he was able to live long enough to see the rise of the generations of artists his label inspired.

As long as people are still listening to great music, he will never be forgotten.

RIP Phil.

Not bad going for an immigrant from Poland, born Fiszel Czyz and a good example of the benefits an immigrant from C/E Europe can bring to the place they go to.

Chess (run by him and his brother Leonard) has to be one of the great independent record labels for rhythm 'n blues and blues... In addition to those great artists the OP listed, also Howlin' Wolf,Little Milton,Etta James and Little Walter.

If you don't know this stuff, start here!

He was just a pawn in the music industry, but sounds like he should have been a Knight!

Was he involved with Castle Records? Just thought I'd ask in passing.
