Hi all,

Have applied for an internal role at my company, transport manager. No experience in transport at all. Had a telephone interview and the person I spoke with said I need to have good knowledge of HGV's (I know nothing about them whatsoever). He mentioned the FTA? (Freight transport association??) Wasn't a great line so a lot of what he said went over my head whilst I played it cool . Anybody on HOL currently in the field / have been / know anything about a HGV other than where the steering wheel and gear stick are? Any knowledge would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

I don't work for an HGV company but I deal with a lot of companies that Employ lcv / HGV drivers. It depends on the role but I would imagine you won't stand much chance.

Most companies would expect the manager to have a CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) though of someone in your company already has it you could get away with it.

Also ensuring that your fleet is efficient and you're not having lots of empty loads travelling all over the country. If it's an international freight company then different countries have different regulations too.

Then depending on what you ship, there could be further regulations eg hazchem

we have a group fleet manager who has the CPC qualification. Looking at JD not necessary for this role I've applied for. The efficiency aspect and transport utilization is fairly straight forward, as you said don't send a lorry across the country with nothing on the back of it. It's all within the London and South East so nothing out of the country . I think what he wants me to learn about are rules for the drivers. How long they can drive for, how long they have to break for. Taco's etc etc.

I just reread my post didn't mean to be that negative sorry. I guess it is worth giving it a go, the DoT website has a lot of information regarding driver regs etc so you can swat up on before the interview

Crikey, where to start . . .

1st of all go onto DVLA website & read up on driver hours etc, you can also find out about CPC,s there as well, i have 4(General Freight, Passenger Carrying, LGV driver & PCV driver).

As your fleet will be operating within the TFL area, you will need to know about FORS(Fleet Operater Recognition Scheme). Then on top of that, depending on your loads, you,ll need to know about weight distribution, route planning(heights of bridges, weight limits, width limits etc etc)

Then you may have to deal with crossrail building sites. . . Need i go on?

Good Luck 😕

It's easy when you mess up just blame the driver. And don't forget to practice your lying.

Apart from the drivers daily check, driving regulation is the most important thing to know....vosa,which regulates the drivers and companies can be a f***ing nightmare.
So its vital that when you send a driver out,if hes not tramping that he has suffient hours to complete the load.
I drive a truck so I know about laws and regs.
