Martin, As you know, I am a painter & as such know f*** all about plumbing & even less about central heating. However, you needn't bother with any of the above advice. Just turn the immersion heater On & off whenever you want hot water or better still leave it on constantly. Bingo. Hot water forever (and an electricity bill so big that you'll have to sell a kidney to cover) Kids,tired of being bothered by your pesky parents? Then leave home, get a job & pay your own bills, while you still know everything.

If the lever is lose that means that the motor has moved to the 'on' position. However if it is not turning the pump and boiler on it sounds like the valve isn't hitting the microswitch... Turn off the mains power before attempting anything. Take off the top of the valve and you will see the motor which is held in by one (tiny) screw. Undo that and cut the two wires attaching it to the valve. The new motor will have two wire connectors so you can then twist the wiring back together. Put the motor in position, screw it in place and that's that. I'd that doesn't work, it could be the whole valve head. Without sounding too precious... Please be careful

Yourself, Picasso and Rembrandt never went without hot water I bet !!
