So let me get this right...she died on 11th Jan this year? and yet the assault happened 4 years ago (in 2012)...are you suggesting he was to blame then or am I reading the article wrong?

Statute of manslaughter / Murder requires that the victim dies of their injuries within a year and a day (I think) of the assault (actually turns out to be three years if it occurred after 1996). It would require proof that the injuries inflicted caused her death. Its rare though that prosecution occurs over a year if the individual has been 'active and normal' ie not hospitalised or in a coma.
