Who were bigger sluts? Yates or Orchid girls.

Cut me teeth in Croydon. Think it all started at the Rue St George and deteriorated from there. Cafe Moonshine, Snifters, Kings Cellars, Elephant Bar, Blue Anchor etc etc. Thems were the days.

Anyone remember a dodgy place above a cafe on the East Croydon/Addiscombe border....'Louis' I think. Could get a late drink and had a dj all night.

We must be similar age as all those names bring a smile to my face as all of them were a big part of my life when I to was cutting my teeth in Croydon.

I also liked having a beer in the Townhouse which is now Dice Bar I believe.

Great times and great memories.. The Metropole nightclub in Purley was also a frequent haunt.

Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!!

I think you are talking about 'the Croydon'
was a nice pub.
Had a very 70s spiral staircase to a small basement bar, all big cushions.
The bar was straight until 8-9, as you said then mainly gay clientele onwards.
I worked in menswear trade through mid 70s and as soon as shops closed on a sat 5 or 5.30 it was chockah with shop staff all drinking heavily.
my very naïve brother made good friends with a man dressed as a vicar in there one night, went red as a plum.

Yes Bob.... think it was called "The Croydon". Your description of the layout sounds familiar.

My gaydar isn't very good cos me and another mate strayed into a gay bar in Prague and got settled in before some Czech Pouff asked my mate for a dance.... another quick exit!

Worked in the offices above The Croydon in Park Street for a while in the early 90's. It was ok at lunchtime and early evening and had the advantage of the office fire escape sharing access with the pub one meaning you could get in and out of the pub without ever actually leaving the building, often leading to a swift pint mid afternoon as well.

But from about 8 ish a more flamboyant crowd made the place their own.

Started venturing into Croydon around 2001/2002 - Flares thursday, fridays and saturday night, mixed with Walkabout.

Then evolved, or devolved into litten tree, lloyds and Edwards/reflex.

Honestly, being away at sea for 9 years i missed it all, now back i want to go to a nice wine bar or meal, where talking takes place - rather than going for the most drunk girl on the dance floor.

One thing does stand out, when inside smoking stopped and the bars/clubs smelt musty, of farts and sweat.

This was once a quality forum....

Remember going to an under 18's night at the metropole in Purley..and seeing an up and coming band called take that. Was only interested in 'getting off with girls' that night... But best thing that happened was my mate (I don't condone this) threw an ice cube and hit a certain Robbie Williams in the eye!

The beer cellar, the entrance was a small door somewhere near Marks and Spencer, had some absolutely banging nights in there in the early 70's, so much beer going around we were swimming in the stuff. Happy day's.

Yes it was very well known for people going through the back doors.
