So the conservatives / gun nuts over here are freaking out about Obama's (read that name through gritted teeth for the appropriate effect) executive action to close some gaping holes in the background check system. They see it as an assault on their liberty/freedom/constitutional rights/small p****. Of course, Obama is only taking action because a relatively small overhaul of the background check system - in that everyone has to have one to buy a gun - put forward after the Sandy Hook school massacre was blocked in the Senate by Republicans (and two bloody-handed Democrats). So now he's trying to close some of the holes in the swiss cheese of regulation around background checks, and the inevitable - hilarious if it wasn't so scary/serious - freakout is in full swing. By way of background (pun intended), I always thought that it was illegal for regular people to have fully automatic weapons. It's not. At all. For a person to get one, they're required to go through an enhanced level of screening, which is a good thing. But I said person; what if the fully automatic weapon was being acquired by a corporation or trust? No background check. None. Nada. So if you want one, it's easier to set up a gun trust to buy it on your behalf than it is to buy it yourself. It's also harder to trace and there is no ability of the authorities to know where or to whom that incredibly dangerous weapon is going. In 2000, there were 900 purchases of fully automatic weapons made by corporations/trusts. I'm assuming that a lot are for the movie industry, but there's still some private individuals in there. In 2014, there were 90,000...NINETY THOUSAND. Coincidentally (or not), since Obama became president, the number of militia groups in the U.S. has tripled. The NRA endlessly bleats that the only protection against a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. What if the bad guy has a bigger gun...that's fully automatic?

Christ...There was me thinking about going on holiday to US next year..... That loophole is attention-grabbing (which is why I highlighted it) but it’s not the biggest issue. 90% of all Americans support universal background checks: if you want to buy a gun, you should have to be run through the system. Currently, people on the terrorist watch list can’t buy a plane ticket, but they can buy as many guns as they can get their hands on. No checks are required for private sales which allows for straw purchases (like those made by the San Bernadino nutjobs) to happen. Background check-free private sales are how the “gun show loophole” comes about: many sellers at gun shows aren’t registered businesses so the sales are treated as private. There is at least one gun show a week somewhere in the Houston area – often at the main convention centre (think Earl’s Court) - so these aren’t small affairs and almost anything you can think of is on sale. Having said that, it's the 6th of January and I've yet to see anyone with a gun on their hip here in Texas. Of course, open carry is banned in my workplace by the building owners (by posting the legally required and regulated signage, without which they would be prohibited from stopping anyone walking in with a gun) and by law in any establishment that makes more than 50% of its revenue from alcohol sales. So it's not like I've spent much time in places where you can openly carry. I suspect it would be very much the same for anyone on a tourist itinerary. However, it can't hurt to check the gun laws in the places you're thinking about visiting. At least, that way, if you get out of the airport and feel like you've stepped into a spaghetti western, you won't be too surprised. Edited by Ray in Houston (06 Jan 2016 4.10pm)

What always amazes me is how gun owners, and thus very often republicans, always go on about the Constitution and the 2nd Amendemnt i.e. the right to bear arms. But that amendment actually blabs on about to do that to form a militia. Now I don't actually see too many gun owners rushing to form a militia, local or otherwise, to keep anyone at bay. It has just turned into a stereo-typical American excess of getting everything you can for yourself, in this case as much ammunition and as many guns as you want. Let's face it, if the "winning" reaction to the murdering of 20 small kids & some of their teachers (Sandy Hook, Newtown) is "more guns" it won't change anything except perhaps the state of the country's moral decline, which will just slide into one of complete despair.
Taking the bungy jump since 1964. Never to see John Jackson in a shirt again Sorry to see Lee Hills go, did we ever see Alex Marrow? We did January 2013 |

According to the washington post 27 people were shot and killed, with a further 67 injured by firearms in the USA on Christmas day alone. We don't have that many a year. or even two years. Ive posted a link to figures that even the most idiotic labotamised clampit NRA Member from some southern state back water, can't argue with.

The NRA is now nothing but a lobbyist for the gun manufacturing industry. Over the years, they have pushed back regulations because, simply, there has been no one pushing the other way. That's why you now have patently crazy s*** like open carry and stand-your-ground. It's a well-oiled machine, and it kicks into high gear following each new shocking gun crime. They have their patented talking points that they use to drown out proponents of gun control and they run out the clock on our attention span; until the next time when they start all over again. Things seem more fraught right now, because they are. This is because gun control appears to be gaining some real traction, and the old bulls*** has lost is potency. If the sane part of the country - and this includes people like my father-in-law who has a number of guns (mostly for hunting) - continue to warm to gun control, then the crazies are going to get worse. This laughable militia stand-off in Oregon is just the beginning. I say laughable, because they're a bunch of deluded rubes who think the Gub'mint (i.e. the Kenyan Mooslin in the White House) is coming for their freedom (i.e. guns and illegal grazing habits); they've set themselves up for an occupation to last years, they say, while equipping themselves with enough guns and ammo for a small war and enough food and clothing for a week. But what happens when they get desperate; hungry, tired and cold? Will they take the humiliation of just surrendering? Will they try and bust out? Will their friends try and resupply them? This has the potential to get very, very bad. And if some or all of these guys end up dead, then the rest of their ilk will have martyrs to their cause. The real fight against gun control is yet to come: trying to enforce gun regulations on heavily armed people who don't want it. Edited by Ray in Houston (07 Jan 2016 3.18pm)
