Two different stories altogether there. The East London one isn't being treated as someone with a screw loose at all

...people who suffer a religion happen to be rather partial to a bit of fruitcake, they'd eat anything from a book that they like the look off and the bit about the drill means we have to do better next time somebody with a knife stands at the exit killing people as they come out

Hilarious.

Of course followers of non religious types, like Hitler, Castro, Mussolini, Kim il-Jong, Mao or Pol Pot, would never arbitrarily murder people because of an 'ideology', would they?

Hitler was Christian and I would be surprised if Mussolini wasn't a Catholic.

Not really, both we're baptised etc but neither same Christainity as anything other than a convenient ally. Both Fascism and National Socialism, like communism, are atheistic (admittedly there is a Paganistic overtone to both).

I know this will be shot down by most on here, however when I see big guys running around with knives stabbing random people, I really don’t know why we don’t re-introduce the death penalty.
It’s estimated that every new prisoner costs the state roughly 65k pa to keep them, reducing to 40k pa for every year thereafter. If the guys gets banged up for 10-12 years then this has cost roughly 500k of tax-payers money, only to find he may come out and offend again.
What a bloody waste of money, 40kpa would pay for an extra police officer on our streets.
Growing up in Tooting in the 70s I remember London always having it’s gangsters/hard men/villains etc, however, on the whole it was a far safer place to be than it is now.
There’s too many of these nutters in our once great city and we need to start cleansing society of this scum.

Executing people is really really expensive, because the number of legal challenges, appeals etc that they need to go through are monumental, and the levels of judicial oversight and involvement at each stage would be exceptional. Its the problem the US has, executing someone takes up to two decades in some cases, of appeals, court hearings, appeals and so on and so forth.

The 70s safer, I don't know, but I remember that the 80s was plagued with violence - most notably going to football could result in you being brutally beaten, stabbed or even killed.

The past tends to be romanticised, but it was a much more violent place where a fight on a Friday night probably wouldn't have seen charges brought unless someone was seriously hurt, and where beating up your wife was generally considered a husbands privilege by the police.

Not to mention bombings by the IRA.

I can't explain why but I don't view this as a Terrorist Attack, more a nutter who has used Syria as an excuse.

That's exactly how I see it.

I am guessing the police used the fact the bloke said "This is for Syria" as their reason for labelling this incident as a "terrorist" incident.

Hitler was completely obsessed with the occult, It went further with him believing he was some type of god like figure, he even had an army of psychics that waged a war against his enemies.

Hardly the thinking of an atheist.

As soon as I read "this is for Syria" my first thought was "which Syria?". I mean the place is such a mess right now, was he backing Assad, Daesh, the Free Syrian Army, the Kurds, any of the other God-knows-how-many factions fighting out there, or the poor innocent s0ds caught in the middle of the lot?

Not by the time, the disbelief in or rejection of god, doesn't necessarily mean someone is a scientific rationalist. Especially in that period of time, occult revivalism was quite popular in the 19th and early 20th century.

We tend to view atheism as being a form of 'reasonable scepticism', but that's not necessarily true of all atheism.

I think there is a massive difference from inspired by to a conspiracy to cause terrorism. These kind of attacks are generally 'lone wolf', rather than people who actually have be trained, financed, backed or supported by a specific group.

Similar to Breivik in Sweden, they tend to be self organised, involve incidents of mental illness as much as anything, and almost impossible to stop. They tend to be linked to political ideologies and causes, but by people who have rarely made much progress or engagement in those causes directly.

They're a real danger though, because these kinds of people don't usually belong to groups and conspiracies, and are self financed, resourced, directed and driven, meaning they're almost impossible to stop.
