I would recommend: 1. Try and stop in Bruges or Gent rather than Brussels. 2. Maybe think of an alternative to Frankfurt. The surroundings are quite picturesque (eg, Königstein-am-Taunus) but the city itself is ugly and there's not much going on. I would recommend Giessen, Würzburg or Bamberg which are kind of on the way from Belgium to Slovakia, or at least not much more of a diversion than Frankfurt. This. And avoid Hamburg during the day, and Koln at all times. Hamburg at night, is like Amsterdam on steroids (or at least it was).

It has been a difficult couple of years for me, it's something im not going to go into detail with here but ive found myself with some real savings for the first time in my life & im looking to quit the dead end job & live the dream for a while & spend a winter season enjoying 50p pints of beer, amazing food, epic scenery, & amazing people of Slovakia whilst living in the mountains. Does anyone have anyone have advice for trekking across europe, its about an 18 hour drive so im looking to break it up into stops at Brussels, Frankfurt, Prague & then eventually onto Liptovsky Mikulas. Basically im looking for a decent 4x4 (tops £3000) that will get me there & cope with 2/3ft of snow everyday & anything that I should plan to take with me. Thanks to everyone in advance. Bit of a detour if you're trying to get to Slovakia though

By the way Dan, you will need to buy winter tyres. It's a legal requirement if there is snow or ice. I believe in the Czech Republic it's mandatory to carry them from November until March. As I recall you have to put them on to use the highways, but that may be only during snow. Good advice mate, I was gonna go for all weather tyres. Also a driving tip - you need to drive with lights on even during the day. It's a legal requirement in Slovakia. Enjoy! Mrs Oldfella is Slovak. Love the place.
