In the last few months I have tipped the BT engineer and the British Gas engineer and they were really surprised when I offered them the money. I have also tipped the Autoglass chap who replaced my windscreen at my home.

Good service at a bar I'm happy to 'buy one for the barman'. In the old days when you bought a drink for the bartender he/she used to have a half and raise it as a 'Thank You' to the customer. Never see this anymore, perhaps because it might be deemed unacceptable to be seen drinking behind the bar.Think now they put the money in their pocket instead of purchasing a drink. I think it is some of the companies that run pubs nowadays; they're just restaurants. I offered the barman a drink and was refused. Probably drinking at work? My son works in a pub and is occasionally bought drinks. They are not allowed to drink it there and then but can have it after a shift but only on that day (his shift ends at 1AM) and isn't allowed to take the cash equivalent. It's minimum wage and he has to pay for a cab home as it is after the last bus. It's zero hours too so if it's wet and the pub isn't busy he will be told not to come in.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses. |
