Never saw the point of these pretentious music rags telling me and others who was cool and who to listen to. I just used my ears and got about London to hear bands and make my own mind up. Useful in the days before interwebs for information and spurious articles about bands. After all, it would have been hard to know just how much of a c**t Morrisey was without NME or MM, or when something was coming out etc, or what Essentially its like football journalism, largely devoid of any real journalism or valuable information. A classic example of an entire industry growing out of the provision of gossip and egos.

I have still got my old NMEs from mid 1976 to 1979 , had a few of them framed and hung in the house . that period of the magazine was its most influential , burchill and parsons , nick kent and lester bangs , big influence on me as a teenager . Yes I used to look forward to Thursdays when this came out & to a lesser degree The Melody Maker. I also used to buy The Face (is that still going?)& probably have the first few copies somewhere in a suitcase in the loft....
