I remember doing guard duty in different countries around the world during my stay in the army. I was not in the guards or anything like that just an infantry regiment. Anyway we carried pick axe handles with orders to beat the crap out of anyone who was suss. Now days I think they carry weapons, less troubled times in the 60's so everyone was seen as less of a threat.
