Shawshank Redemption - average book made into a great film
Your beliefs are incorrect (me & mongo give it a slating in the link). There's a few of us Kerm - I often enjoy reading the 'Hated it' reviews on IMDB (where it remains the no1 top rated film) A fairly enjoyable but forgettable and flawed film that isn't a patch on any of the movies it attempted to plagiarise. Over-rated doesn't nearly cover it. Massively overated film. Its alright, its better than the book, and its better than the remarkably sh*t Green Mile, but its not even a decent prison movie. Its boosted massively by the narration.

A rarity is Ian Fleming and early Bond movies. Both as good as each other. Obviously the books are a bit deeper, well written too, but Connery's Bond and the scripts don't fail the author. The books paint a much darker and nastier Bond, much more of a necessary evil man, hard drinking, misogynistic and borderline sociopathic than any of the Bonds until Daniel Craig (Casino Royal) managed (Noteworthy I thought that Goldeneye had more a nod to the Bond of the novels, than the movies). I finished Diamonds are Forever this week and have From Russia With Love to start next. I'd be permanently sozzled if I drank as much as Bond does every day. Shame it's not as easy to get hold of benzedrine these days, another of his preferred tonics and quite an effective sharpener by the sound of it. Fight Club - love the film. Binned the book after struggling with the first few chapters. Would like to see Inherent Vice as I read the book a few years ago and loved the hippy vibe would like to know if the film lives up to it. Shockingly that how Flemming and friends used to drink, and then took the 'speed tablets' to stay upright and keep on drinking. World War 2 was largely fought on Benzedrine.

The Beach
Couldn't disagree more. Loved the film (watched it before reading) and love the book. Really I thought it was an awful film and missed the whole point of the book. The author wasn't afraid to have his incredibly flawed protagonist think like an actual human. He is a bit of a dick, pretty randy and a bit of a coward but such an accessible character. This was lost in the film in my humble opinion. Also they had to Americanise it which didn't work.

I read Peter Benchley's Jaws book many years ago and thought it was really good. There's a lot of factual information in there about the science of sharks, as far as I can recall. I am stuck on Ellen Brody masturbating in a diner at the moment.
Its not as exciting as it sounds SF....imagine female w@nking as written by Barbara Cartland...

I saw We Need To Talk About Kevin last night and was mightily impressed. Grim as f*ck though. Haven't read the book but I guess it's even more depressing. Charlie and Lola was a successful transfer I thought.

I quite enjoy historical fiction and Ken Follets Pillars of the earth and World without end (much better than the first IMHO) both are excellent reads and although not a movie but 8 part mini series and both were great also if that sort of thing appeals. Another is The book thief which had great review for books but it was narrated in the voice of death and I couldn't get into it but the film was enjoyable. I enjoyed Dan Browns Angels and Demons book but turned the film off halfway through couldn't get into it. I suppose some make good films some don't all depends on lots of things though like storyline, director etc.

Charlie and Lola was a successful transfer I thought. It's a great book. I read it before seeing the film and would say it is far better and complex than the film. They changed a few things, for example it is a cross-bow in the book rather than a long-bow.
