Crystal Palace opened their pre-season account with a penalty shoot-out win over FC Luzern.

The Eagles ran out 6-5 winners on spot-kicks against their Swiss opponents after the summer tournament game ended all square at 1-1.

Striker Christian Benteke gave Palace an ideal start by heading Max Meyer's cross from the left into the top corner after just two minutes.

But Luzern levelled matters just four minutes later when Christian Schneuwly fed Pascal Schurpf and he converted past Wayne Hennessey.

With neither side able to add any further goals, this Uhrencup tie went to penalties in order to settle a result.

James McArthur, Joel Ward, Martin Kelly, Jeffrey Schlupp, Alexander Sorloth and Nya Kirby all put away their kicks from 12 yards, before Luzern's Remo Arnold missed his effort in sudden death.

Palace starting line-up: Hennessey, Van Aanholt, Riedewald, Dann, Woods, Meyer, Milivojevic, Dreher, Townsend, Wickham, Benteke.

Subs: Henderson, Ward, Mitchell, Kelly, Schlupp, McArthur, Kirby, Flanagan, Sorloth, Daly.
