The gap between the critics and their luvvie mates and the public seems to be growing wider. The amount of times I have read a review of a film or play with the luvvies going overboard only for it to sink without a trace at the box office. The latest is Sheridan Smith in Opening Night. Before it opened there was plenty of coverage about her brilliant performance from the previews. It seems the public have been walking out in large numbers and the box office forced to cut the ridiculous prices for tickets, now it seems it will close early. Of course because she has had mental health issues no one wishes to criticise her so the typical comments are she's great but the play is a mess. Why can't the luvvies just accept that plays and films can bomb. Meanwhile Disney is trying to unpick the mess of the last couple of years with big budget movies flopping at the box office despite the critics praising them. And they still have issued Snow White I suggest they go for a Thanksgiving weekend release, turkey's all round. Edited by Badger11 (04 Apr 2024 9.52am)

This should be seen as a Venn diagram. On the one hand you get what the critics like. The other bubble is what I like. Where there is cross over lies my subjective truly great, original stuff. How big that wedge is depends on a lot of factors too complex to bother my head this morning. However, the thing about what critics like being different to what I like is partly due to education and partly due to the nature of their work. They see motives, themes, zeitgeist, influences, homage, in-jokes and so on. I see what I like. However, of more importance, they see far too much. If you have to sit through film after film, play after play, record after record, they all merge into one. Anything that stands out will get the critics foaming, not because it is intrinsically good, but because it is so refreshingly different for them. Thus, there are plenty of critically acclaimed films that rest happily in my cross-over wedge. The 400 Blows, The Rules of the Game, The Third Man, Tokyo Story are all such examples. However, A Bout de Souffle, If, Mulholland Drive, and Performance are all self indulgent twaddle.

Yup fair enough. I mentioned the Sheridan Smith lay because I think the preview reviews were over the top and having read what the play was I thought it's not for me. I think certain actors often escape criticism which others would get, twas ever thus I suppose. I guess I just seem to see more and more of it these days maybe I am paying more attention. Hermione Potter was bloody awful in the live action remake of Beauty and The beast but you wouldn't think so from the reviews, gush.

I think the luvvies strike impacted film revenue immensely over the past year. Oppenheimer was very very good, but up against Barbie as competition ?

Barbie inspired the critical acclaim as it was a feminist re-imagining (dread phrase) of an iconic toy of the Stepford Wife mould. Oppenheimer, on the other hand, is a true masterpiece of its time, but still suffered attack as the wife's character was (it appears) insufficiently important.

I started this thread after the obsequious coverage of Sheridan's Smith's new play. It's now been cancelled, despite the Luvvies lapping it up. The public either walked out or stayed away in droves. Up next wall to wall coverage of "My anguish over cancelled show" by Sheridan Smith.

Actually Sheridan Smith is the only saving grace in this musical disaster. She is not a bad actress and can carry a tune. The play itself is the issue, poorly written and badly staged. Bit as you say lots of plays bomb, the answer seems increasingly to get a big star in and revive an old classic. If you want to see proper incentive theatre look at some of the smaller stages or places like the National

I go to the theatre when I can afford it. This afternoon I have been looking at West End plays, ticket Prices are around £100-150. In one case they are selling tickets at £100 with a restricted view and they wonder why the Theatre is struggling.
