Is that the direct debit amount each month doubled or the kw/h electric and m3/h gas

Us and energy companies are having to pay a ‘green’ tax. This is about 25%, add the annual regular rises on and the figure hits around the difference. Net zero 2050 is not the great utopian existence as getting there was never a consideration. Trump called it and got hammered. The question of why wasn’t asked. I think it’s being answered now!

You can request that it’s reduced and then pay the difference next year. By then the costs will have fallen so it might be split into next years monthly amounts.
I am on a gas card and key meter.
Just had a BG letter with last years gas use at £500 aug21 to aug22 and next years estimated at about £750. Now that is a 50% increase but I pay as I use it. Bit more expensive but my very own smart meter without nosey Parker’s checking my hourly use. Waiting on electric estimate but again I can put on what I want as and when. It works out about £4 a day for my electric atm. That’s a 3 bed with 4 adults and fans running and tvs and ps games etc for the ‘grown up’ children
Also people arnt aware that they control the direct debit amount not the receiver of said DD. The DD guarantee we all sign allows changes from the company receiving it.
A standing order cannot be adjusted by the company so that is an option on a budget.
In the current market it is unlikely that any power or gas will be cut off for low or non payment.
I was going to change from my prepay but now I’m pleased I didn’t. It can be inconvenient but also you get £10 emergency credit if you run out of normal credit and that then comes off when you top up.

I think 90% of families are going to notice a difference. For people already on a financial knife, this is going to be a genuine problem.

And I cannot shake the notion that this entire crisis has been manufactured. That some very powerful people WANT us to struggle here in Europe.

Thanks for the advice Cryrst. General thought seems to be that the high prices will continue through 2023 so I think we'll keep the dd rather than risk getting clobbered for a big bill later.

Anyone who lived through the inflationary 70s is less concerned about what's going on. We'll re-adjust and budget accordingly. Folk these days are too quick to whinge and expect to be bailed out by 'the government', forgetting that it's their money the government has to use.

Anyway, I received a note from British Gas yesterday to advise that I would be paid £400 in October to assist with my energy bill. Hunky dory.
