When you retire, unless you make the personal choice to, you don't just suddenly sit in an armchair all day doing nothing but watch daytime television!

There is a period of adjustment to not having to get up and follow the daily grind that has been life for so many years, but that is soon tempered by the freedom of choosing to get up so you can get on with all the things you have wanted to do with your life, but never had the time, and to do them at your leisure, not some restrictive timetable.

My talents and life experience are not going to waste, thank you very much, but they are being directed and used in different ways - now I use them for my satisfaction rather than to make money for an employer.

Sam has so much experience of sorting football clubs out, even at 62, he has so much to offer the footballing world.
My neighbours are extremely good scene of crime investigators (now retired), and I just think it's a real waste of talent.
Then two deaths in the news. Terry Butcher's son and this Navy Officer-see link (retired)

How can a submarine officer, who has undergone some very expensive training, retire at 35 ?

Terry Butcher's son was also 35 and a retired Captain in the Royal Artillery.

I despair sometimes of all those years of training/experience, gone to waste.

Or am I missing something ? (probably)

I mean, actors go on acting until they die

A lot of service people "retire" from their career in the forces and then go on to forge another career elsewhere. When I joined Schroders many years ago almost all their training officers were ex-servicemen. I have a client who served on nuclear submarines; he retired around mid 30s and subsequently had a career with Fujitsu until normal retirment age. His navy experience was highly regarded by employer, and he has both a navy and Fujitsu pension.

Posters like Kermit on here, and one or two others, think we should all hurry up and die, so that they can usher in the socialist utopia, or rejoin the EU, or have more immigration etc.

I heard this song and immediately thought of you!

I recently took semi-retirement at the age of 62. Working a 2-3 day week now instead of the stupid, form-filling 72 hour week I was doing is great. If you can afford it and your job's painful, it is a route to greater happiness. I was a teacher by the way. I wouldn't have coped so well with a total retirement however.

To roughly quote Dustin Hoffman, who is now 80, "We are the lucky few who don't have a job. It's not a job, it's our work"

I'd imagine being stuck in a contained space for most of the year would make you want to change career more quickly than most too. But to answer the actual question, how could you stop them from retiring? You can't force someone to stay in a career forever.

Optimistic as ever

Thank God he didn't do that while he was below the surface!

Hopefully, he didn't open any doors whilst a submariner
