Aaaargh yes. Good thread.

I vaguely remember thinking that we were all going to go up in Mushroom Clouds from about 1980 for a good few years, (Whoops Apocalypse and Spitting Image on telly) but apart from that:

Ski Sunday theme tune, nicked from Innsbruck Winter Olympics coverage as I recall. If Innsbruck was '76, I was only 7. Downhill skiing looked AMAZING!

The drought of '76 and standpipes.

Silver Jubilee street parties and mugs, '77

Star Wars.

Battle of the Planets hitting children's hour somewhen in the late 70's / early 80s. Seriously.

Street Sounds Electro albums, early 80's and doing windmills on spread-out cardboard boxes in the playground.

Miners' Strike, '84

Gauntlet hitting arcades. '85?

Chernobyl disaster '86

Herald of Free Enterprise sinking with open doors '87

Hungerford massacre '87

Serious, proper House club culture and first drug use ' 88 and ongoing dance club madness for about 5 years.

Ceaucescu execution and Berlin Wall '89

Foot & Mouth and having to drive through disinfectant 2001

Anything more recent is probably in line with everyone else, apart from the sudden spike in aggressive media manipulation of opinion over the last couple of years and the State doing for David Kelly because he blew the whistle on the whole blag of the Iraq WMD bollox.

Well I think Simon's head is large; always involved in espionage. (Name that tune)

Rather red faced here. I remember watching the red shoe diaries (tv on silent) so I could hear if anyone came up the stairs....

Concorde has been and gone. First flew in 1969 and retired in 2003.

our first colour tv.
Approx. 1974.
watched 'carry on jack' that evening as it was last delivery.
Seemed totally cutting edge at the time.

On a serious note, one of the most shocking memories was the brutal lynching / murder of the 2 plain clothes soldiers who took a wrong turn & got stuck in a republican funeral march in N.I (80's?)

Kids, tired of being bothered by your pesky parents?
Then leave home, get a job & pay your own bills, while you still know everything.

I was born in 1954 (so sub 4 minute mile and climbing Everest happened in my lifetime).... but I only really remember experiencing major events from 1960 onwards.

The highlights/lowlights include....

JFK shot in 63

Winning the World Cup in 66

Aberfan Disaster also 66

The Moon landings 69/70's

Red Rum winning the Grand National 3 times 73, 74 and 77

Botham's Ashes 81

Berlin Wall (built 61) destroyed in 89

Death of Princess Diana 97

New Millennium 99/00

Twin Towers 01

Frankie Dettori's 7 winners in one day 06

EU referendum result 16

These are/were just in my head - I checked the dates on google but remembered most of them.

Hilary's Everest news reached London on 2 June 1953. You must have heard it on the radio as a very young (unborn ) boy.
