The Lib Dems went to their members and got a green light to go into coalition.

Ok, does that mean that the most serious pledge they ever made could not have been a red line for them with the tories. That pledge finished them in the next election.

That showed me and everyone else in the country exactly what they were trying to avoid, that they cannot be trusted. I believe that if you give your word, you stick to it, even if it costs you.

Also that pledge was made at a time when the honesty of politicians was being seriously called into question, that's why they wrote it down and signed it on T.V.

But separate from that, he just doesn't deserve to be Sir Nick... IMHO..

I always understood that Tony Blair stated when he stood down as PM that he didn’t want to be nominated for any honours. Unlike Prescott, of course, who in typical style couldn’t wait to be measured up for his ermine gown.

Prescott. Deputy PM. Lord.
Clegg. Deputy PM. Knight. If you accept honours in the first place, then the latter seems reasonable by comparison.

On what grounds would Farage be more eligible than an ex-deputy prime minister, who has sat in parliament for 12 and led the Liberal Democrats to their first ever taste of power in government.

I'm not sure that Clegg deserves it, but Farage hasn't even sat in Parliament.

Farage is simply the most important political figure in the UK since Blair. Without him, there would be no Brexit. He has freed us from the ball and chain that is the EU.

He deserves a knighthood.

I believe honours are given to politicians (rightly or wrongly is a matter of opinion) for ‘service’ and not for particular campaigns, policies etc.

He has given service to this country and this state of affairs highlights how ridiculous this country has become.

This is the type of person who deserves an honour. But of course as she is one of the little people it's only an MBE. A 70yo woman who has spent her life fostering over 100 kids.

I don't think there's a single important policy on which I agree with the Lib/Dems, but I believe Clegg has been dealt with ridiculously unfairly. His pledge in respect of further education fees was contained in his party's election manifesto. Manifestos state what a party would do in power, and the simple fact is that he didn't achieve power! Therefore he couldn't implement his pledges.

But he has been portrayed by Lib/Dems as a traitorous devil-in-disguise and support for his party has collapsed - which just goes to show what a fluffy mob they are.

Charles Kennedy abstained, but coalitions are often difficult - look at Germany right now, the Social Democrats want to oppose not prop AM again.

The problem is, a politician is far more likely to get a knighthood by keeping their head down, always voting with their party, never asking questions, and just being in the role for a long time, while never making waves.

In this respect, the likes of Farage, Corbyn, Ken Clarke etc invariably torpedo their chances.

Also, Clegg stated he was against an unelected upper chamber, so would not be taking up a seat in the Lords (although I don't believe he would be eligible anyway)- but without having enough principles to actually turn down the honour. What a tosser.

Knighthoods in general are a joke really. Do good because it's the right thing to do, not because you want a pat on the back. Many receiving knighthoods did f*** all anyway, Clegg included.
