Not sure about that, they are atrocious in the air together and corners against are virtually worth a goal to the opposition. Burnley Away and West Ham at home being just two examples where we looked like conceding every time. I agree, Cannon and Gilbert were far superior actually defending, Guehi and Andersen are better with the ball at their feet, but for actually keeping the ball out of the net, big Jim and Sir Billy all day long. Also Guehi and Andersen couldn’t match Billy Gilbert for pace, he had an incredible turn of pace for a central defender

Sad to see either depart, but recognise the economics. Best centre half pairing we’ve ever had. Bear in mind the full backs either side. Nearest challenge to this statement from another supporter was Cannon and Gilbert. While only together for a short time (half a season) and played a division below I'd say Popovic and Vicars were like a brick wall to opposition attacking players.

Imagine their passing interplay though: "To me...to you...to me..."

Played in a poor Palace side but did well and both went on to have good careers. As others have said, depends what you are looking for in a pair of defenders. The current two are certainly the best footballing centre backs I can recall at Palace, but they aren't very good at the day job. They are hugely vulnerable under a high ball or a cross, lose markers a lot and get bullied. Personally, I doubt that we gain as much from their passing as we lose due to their defending.
