George Petchey - midfield stalwart of yesteryear

Sad to read today that George Petchey had died, aged 88. I recall his importance, as left half, in our 4th Division promotion side that also included Johnny Byrne, Terry Long, Vic Rouse, Alf Noakes, Ron Heckman etc. He was hard tackling but a skilful passer and scored a fair few memorable goals from long range. He also had playing spells with West Ham and QPR and was manager for a while at Millwall and Leyton Orient.

RIP George Petchey. He was a tremendous number six and although he was a tough tackling mid fielder he was extremely skilful, it's so sad to learn of his passing
........................Then along came Johnny Byrne! and the rest, as they say, is history..................... |

RIP. I remember our promotion year when we came second to Coventry and lost the last game against Oldham - I wonder if George was playing.

Very sad news - slightly before my time (my first game was in 1971) but he & the great Bert Head laid the ground for what we are now. Thank you George Petchey, R.I.P.

RIP, and condolences to his family. He was a very important player, and later coach, who played a big part in Palace's rise from the 4th Division. It would be good to see the club recognise him at the Southampton game.
